___________________________________________
Dear Dr Yousif and Dr Mohamed,
It is with great sorrow and regret
that we receive the news of the tragic death of our great friend and
colleague, Dr Ali Hussain Al-Nuáimy. An explosion took place in
front of the University of Technology in Baghdad on Tuesday morning
right before the Eid. I was with Dr Saleh al-Mumayez when we phoned
Dr Namir to make sure of the safety of our friends there. He
mentioned that it happened outside the campus. It never occured to
us that Dr Ali was anywhere near it. This is a great and
irreplaceable loss to his family, college colleagues, friends and
students. Dr Ali was one year behind me in undergraduate studies at
the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Baghdad. He
graduated in '79 and left afterwards to the United Kingdom where he
earned a PhD in Tranportation Engineering from the University of
Wales at Cardiff. He came back to Baghdad where he took
up a professorship post in Traffic Engineering at the Department of
Civil Engineering of the University of Baghdad. Dr Ali was known for
his great discipline and being strict with students in oder to set
high academic standards for the college. He supervised numerous MSc
and PhD theses in the realm of Transportation Engineering. He was
always in the forefront when conducting studies on Traffic
Engineering aspects in Iraq. His noteable and important publications
in Traffic Engineering apects puts him as one of the most
conspicuous authorities on the subject in Iraq. Abu Marwa had a
pleasant and loveable personality which earned him respect by
whoever knew him. After being admitted to hospital right after the
explosion for several days, he passed away last Thursday. He leaves
behind a wife and five girls. May God almighty rest his soul in
peace and in heaven. Dr Ali will always be remembered by all his
colleagues with respect and love. I chatted over the phone with Dr
Imad Abbas and Dr Ahmed Abdul-Azzel about him. We all feel very sad
and that we have lost a brother and a dear friend. I want to propose
having a class at the Department of Civil Engineering of the
University of Baghdad, where he worked for long years, be named
after him. He, along with many other people whom we all know, are
martyrs in way of serving the Iraqi society and our beloved
homeland, Iraq.
Unfortunately, the sequel of tragic
life losses is still continuing. It is hitting harsh on
professionals in all walks of life in Iraq. During the very same
week when Dr Ali was hit by an explosion, Mt Taleb al-Obaidy, the DG
of Al-Mu'tasim General Contracting Company of the Ministry of
Construction and Housing, was shot dead right in front of the gate
of his work place. Mr Taleb was an efficient civil engineer and an
excellent professional adminstrator. He was able to bring back his
company on its feet at most difficult times. He was very much
respected by all those who worked with him. I sent a condolences
letter to his family last week which expresses my grief. May God
rest his soul in heaven.
Finally, I read in the news bar of
al-Hurra-Iraq TV channel about the killing of Dr Muhamed Kadthum al-Ottaby, the
director of inspection and follow-up at the headquarters of the
University of Baghdad. Though I did not meet him personally, he
phoned me several times asking from me things to do for the
University of Baghdad. He was always thankful from me in whatever I
could help. May God rest his soul in heaven.
I pray to God that there will come
the time soon when these killings would stop and our beloved and
great country, Iraq, comes back to what it was before in peace and
harmony.
Best regards to you and your
families.
Dr Omar al-Farouk al-Damluji.
