Illusions for Life - On the importance of illusion for our life and the role of cinema in creating these illusions

RESEARCH AREA   Film-Philosophy, Aesthetics

KEYWORDS Continental philosophy, film theory, Deleuze, Nietzsche, Kracauer

RESEARCH STATEMENT

My research project analyses the importance of illusions and the way in which mainstream cinema contributes to the creation of modern myths. I approach this question from a background of continental philosophy and aesthetics, based on theories by Friedrich Nietzsche, Siegfried Kracauer and Gilles Deleuze.

Since the beginnings of cinema theorists and artists discussed the difficult relationship between film and reality, rotating between photographic representation and artistic recreation. The problem, however, is older than the medium itself. Nietzsche already discussed the role of art in the creation of illusions. According to him, illusions, which shaped art as well as mythology and religion, have a significant influence on our life and our perception of the world around us. Later Kracauer and Deleuze asked for a cinema that reinstates our connection with the world.

With the advance of digital cinema these questions obtain a new dimension. The use of Computer Generated Images (CGI) and the nearly endless possibilities of altering and modifying the look of a film, filmmakers are able to create film worlds never seen before. Notions of realism based on photographic referentiality become obsolete. Those creative freedom demands new aesthetic concepts, but film theory still seems to strugge catching up with the fast pace of technological development.
