The new BA (Hons) Journalism degree at Westminster

The Journalism degree at Westminster is one of the most
respected qualifications of its kind in the UK. It's based on
teaching the core skills needed to be a journalist - researching,
reporting, interviewing and writing - alongside a mature
understanding of the role of the media in
society
Our course was updated this year to reflect the changing demands
of the convergent news media organisations in the 21st Century. On
the new BA (Hons) Journalism degree at Westminster, you now learn
multimedia skills as a matter of course.
You work across media platforms (print, broadcast and online),
developing new approaches to gathering, presenting and distributing
news.
This multimedia approach reflects the employment needs of modern
media businesses. Employability is key to the new Journalism degree
at Westminster. Our aim is to give you the technical and creative
skills you need to work in the media.
At the same time, the Journalism degree course offers a flexible
environment that allows you to discover and develop new talents and
skills.
Once you've mastered the core journalistic skills (including
working with multimedia), you take charge of your own development
and customise the degree by choosing options to fit your career
plans.
You might discover a real talent for radio or TV journalism: you
might want to take your online skills to a higher technical level:
perhaps specialise in sport, fashion or music journalism.
Whatever you choose, there are specialist options in the new BA
(Hons) Journalism degree that will help you refine your skills to a
professional level.
Our focus is always on teaching you cutting edge skills, an up
to date awareness of the news media business and the kind of
innovative, creative, socially committed thinking needed to make
things happen in modern journalism.
Key strengths of the BA (Hons) Journalism degree at
Westminster:
- Innovation Our degree course takes a pioneering multimedia
approach to teaching journalism. Students study print, online and
broadcast before getting the chance to specialize.
- Staff Our lecturers have extensive experience of the modern
news media. They've worked for national and international news
media organizations, for magazines, TV stations and websites. Many
are still working journalists.
- Resources Our main teaching spaces were extensively
refurbished this summer. Students now work in the kind of
multimedia, multi-screen newsrooms you find in modern media
organizations. They use the latest iMacs, along with special
multimedia reporting kits, featuring cutting edge digital video and

facilities - professional-level TV and radio studios and edit
suites.
- A Creative Multi-cultural Campus Journalism students work at
the Harrow campus, alongside students doing photography, fashion,
film, graphics and more. Westminster draws students from around the
world, from Europe, the US, India, China and Australia. It's a
stimulating, cosmopolitan place to learn
- Location Our London location means that we're just a tube ride
away from some of the largest and most dynamic news organizations
in the world. We regularly invite high-level journalists and

reputation all help when it comes to finding work experience.

contacts that can lead to a job. Our students have done placements
at media organisations like The Guardian, The Times, the BBC, Sky
News and CNN.
