BA (Hons) Television

PicturCity Bites by Robert Beltone by Robert Belton

The BA Media Studies Television course is designed to give students a good understanding of how broadcast television works and to help students identify the type of role they might play in the industry.

What we teach are the skills to use a camera, edit video, produce a studio programme and make documentaries.

You will also gain an understanding of the way the industry works beyond production, in areas like scheduling, production management and sales.
You may get an opportunity to present but that is not our priority. What we will not do is make you the next Cat Deeley or Graham Norton - nor will we make you a Hollywood director of photography.Practical work is taught two days a week alongside the theory parts of the course and is given equal weight in the final assessments. Not only do we demand a good academic standard, we would like to see some prior interest in the medium, ideally from a practical point of view.

We don't expect everyone to have made videos, but we would like to know you are interested in the medium more than 'just watching the telly'. Experience in school drama productions is useful as well as some interest in photography, for example.

We understand that many students need to work to pay their way through university and
Londonoffers enormous opportunities for work experience in the media. You are also encouraged to visit programme making as part of a studio audience to see what happens.

We do encourage you to get experience and can offer advice but cannot guarantee work placements. However, you are more likely to find opportunities for work experience in London than elsewhere. Some students have managed to get ongoing work experience with production companies through their time as students.

Media studies students have high rates of employability because apart from the television skills, students learn how to work on their own and in groups, to take responsibility, to organise and manage themselves and learn computer skills.
