Connecting the creative and culture industries in China and the UK

Established 2005 to be Europe’s centre for the world’s largest media system, the Centre (CMC) now has 2 Professors, 2 x Post-Docs (1xRCUK), KT Manager and Admin Aide plus part-timers. CMC has four main achievements:

 

Created a high performing research field:

Researchers publish on topics which vary from policy and regulation to magazine publishing to TV drama content. There are (2009) 7 x PhDs and 13 Visiting Scholars from collaborating institutions. CMC is part of Westminster’s Communications & Media Research Institute, judged best in the UK for media and communications in the latest RAE, December 2008.

 

Knowledge Transfer (‘3rd stream’):

CMC earns fees from collaborative projects with the State Council of the PRC and the FCO (Public Diplomacy Challenge Fund), International Media Support (Danish Government) and from consultancy on UK creative industries to Shanghai Media Group, Hunan Satellite Broadcasting etc.

 

Ambassadorship & Knowledge Transfer:

Among many events have been 5 conferences in Parliament 2007: The China Impact: The Westminster Hearings on China’s Economic Development and the UK

For academic and public events we have cooperated with the BBC, Annenberg School, Queensland University of Technology and other overseas institutions.

Scheduled for 2009 are events on the public understanding of the environment and the media roles therein in Parliament and at Wilton Park (FCO).

 

Internationalisation:

CMC is a focal point for MA students who come from China yearly to take media courses, as well as Visiting Lecturers and Researchers. There is an MA module The Chinese Media in the New World Order and a new BA Journalism with Chinese/Arabic Language is in hand. A 2+1 MA with a Chinese partner is launched and a Summer School starts 2009. Helping to set up Indian Media Centre.

 

中国传媒中心成立于2005年,是欧洲致力于中国这一世界最大传媒市场研究的核心学术机构。中国传媒中心由两名教授及其领导下的两名博士后(其中一位为英国研究理事会成员),一名项目经理及行政人员(部分为兼职)组成。

 

中国传媒中心的全球影响力主要体现在四个方面:

 

1.搭建高水平的科研平台。

中国传媒中心的科研团队在多个领域有所著述,从媒介政策与监管到杂志发行再到电视戏剧内容分析。目前中国传媒中心有七名博士生及来自合作科研机构的十三名访问学者。中国传媒中心隶属与威斯敏斯特大学媒体、艺术与设计学院,该学院在全英2008年12月进行的科研考评(RAE)中排名第一。

 

2.知识转换(“第三流运动”)

中国传媒中心与中国国务院、英国外交与联邦事务部(公共外交挑战基金)、国际传媒援助(丹麦政府)以及诸多英国媒介创意产业的顾问公司合作,为上海传媒集团及湖南卫视等开展培训。

 

3.外交使命及知识转换

2007 年中国传媒中心在英国议会举办了题为“中国影响力:中国经济发展与英国”的5场系列听证会。同时还与BBC,宾夕法尼亚大学新闻学院以及昆士兰技术大学等诸多全球的科研机构合作,开展科研项目。2009年,中国传媒中心在英国议会及英国外交与联邦事务部(沃尔顿公园)举办了以“公众对环境问题的理解及传媒角色”为题的研讨会。

 

4.国际化

中国传媒中心的服务对象还包括每年来自中国的学习传媒专业的研究生,客座讲师及研究人员。中国传媒中心为硕士生开展的课程为《新世界秩序下的的中国媒体》,同时,为本科生开展的以中文进行授课的《新闻学》也正在筹办中。中国传媒中心开展的项目还包括与中国合作伙伴合作的2+1研究生课程及自2009年开办的暑期学校。

第三,公益活动。中国传媒中心举办大型活动向英国各界人士介绍中国社会与文化发展。其中包括2006年在唐宁街11号财政大臣官邸举办的“评估中国”系列讲座和2007年2月至7月间的“英国议会中国专题听证会”。

The House of Commons

 

A one-day CMC seminar was held in the Houses of Parliament to address the implications of China's management of its environmental challenges for government policy and British business. It was hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on China and sponsored by Norton Rose. 170 people attended, from business, the policy world and media.

 

One of CMC’s research themes, along with regulation, journalism and innovation in the media, is the relationship between media and environment. This seminar is one of several initiatives connected with this theme, including a workshop at Caijing magazine in  Peking, producing a report on journalism and the environment for International Media Support and being knowledge partner for the October Wilton Park Conference on China’s environment.

Boris Johnson with CMC in China

Boris Johnson in China 1In 2006 the CMC arranged Boris Johnson's first trip to China, when he was Conservative Higher Education Spokesman. He and the Director of CMC travelled together to Shanghai and Peking where they were filmed by BBC Newsnight.

 

2006年,时任影子内阁高等教育部发言人、现任伦敦市长Boris Johnson 在中国传媒中心的安排下,与中心主任戴雨果教授一起,展开了他的首次中国之行;他们在上海和北京的行程由BBC的新闻之夜栏目(Newsnight)摄制成专题节目在黄金时间播出。

ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT PARTY

 

The Director spoke on China and joined the Chinese Ambassador Ms Fu Ying on a panel which also included the Lib-Dem Leader in the Upper House, Lord McNulty, and the Shadow Foreign Affairs Secretary Michael Moore MP.

 

WILTON PARK

The CMC partnered Wilton Park (an Executive Agency of the Foreign Office) with a conference called Working in China on Sustainable Growth — The Climate Change, Environment, Energy Nexus. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Geoffrey Petts, Visiting Professor Hu Zhengrong (Deputy President, China Communications University), Prof Hugo de Burgh and Dr Zeng Rong participated and represented University of Westminster.

 

CONFERENCE ON BRITISH JOURNALISM

CUC and CMC are holding a conference in Beijing in October 2009. CMC is supplying 2 celebrity UK journalists Stephen Hewlett and Kevin Sutcliffe (paid for under the IMS contract) and its Director to speak at a CUC conference in October 2009. Steve Hewlett both presents The Media Show and writes regularly for The Guardian. He has a terrific track record as reporter and producer as well as in newspaper journalism.  Kevin Sutcliffe is Deputy Head of News & Current Affairs at C4 and has been responsible for the renaissance of the investigative series DISPATCHES. CUC has undertaken to provide an audience of influential media managers from the mainstream

 

FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR

EU Commissioner Orban and Chinese Minister for Culture, a French Diplomat and the CMC Director are the speakers at the EU-China Forum at the Frankfurt Book Fair on 15 October.

 

STATE COUNCIL

 

SCIO 09The highest-level ever delegation from China’s State Council Information Office undertook a three week course designed for the China Media Centre by Simon Goldsworthy and Visiting Professor Trevor Morris, experts in branding and PR. Among the highlights were a colloquy with Lord Bell and senior figures at Chime Communications plc; visits to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Cabinet Office, the BBC and the Guardian Newspaper;  talks about advertising from Sir Chris Powell and on the use of new media from former Cabinet Office minister Tom Watson MP; and a lecture in Edinburgh from John Brown, a PR expert who formerly shared an office at Scottish TV with his brother the current Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and CMC Director Professor Hugo de Burgh.

 

SUMMER SCHOOLS

 

cmc summer school 09The China Media Centre has held its first 2 Summer Schools for Chinese media students. In July this was directed by former Reuters Editor Paul Majendie and in September by TV producer Dr Richard Wright.

 

The students both learnt about the European media and undertook practical tasks, making TV features under the direction of Journalism Head of Department Geoffrey Davies.

 

Both summer schools were managed by Alja Kranjec, who hopes to hold at least two each year from now on.

 

INNOVATION 1

 

In October CMC launches another first, a course specially designed for Chinese TV executives by Dr Zeng Rong entitled Innovation, creativity and programme development in UK television. This course is full; if successful CMC expects to offer it twice each year.

 


 

Journalism in Crisis

paxman confJeremy Paxman The University of Westminster in association with the British Journalism Review organised a conference on the Journalism in Crisis.  The Charles Wheeler Award for outstanding contribution to broadcast journalism, sponsored by the British Journalism Review, was awarded to BBC Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman.

Boris Johnson
Mayor of London Boris Johnson was among the packed audience to hear the Director-General deliver a lecture in memory of the late Charles Wheeler – describing the veteran foreign correspondent as the “finest reporter the BBC ever had”.

The China Impact: The Westminster Hearings on China's Economic Development and the UK

 

This series of 5 conferences in the British Parliament ranged over all the key issues from environmental degradation and resuscitation to innovation and research, financial services and resources. Several Chinese ministers, including Mr Liu Mingkang, addressed the  conference as did UK Secretaries of State, Ministers and experts from Parliament. The workshops were led by specialists from UK industry and commerce. The Report, launched in Parliament and at a reception sponsored by McKinsey & Co in Beijing, can be accessed below.
