I have a previous criminal conviction? Do I need to tell employers?
This will depend on two factors:

I don't know my legal position? How can I find out?
Check the current legislation section of this site.  This gives you a summary of the main points of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.  For more detailed information consult NACRO.

What will happen if I don't disclose an unspent conviction ?
Your employer can dismiss you and may even prosecute.

Does the Act cover overseas employment ?
No.  The Act only covers the UK.  You will need to contact the embassies in the countries you are interested in for more specific information.

How should I disclose my conviction ?
It is important to emphasise the positive.  As a graduate you are offering the employer relevant knowledge and expertise.  This is what they are really interested in.  However, the job seeking process will be challenging.  Check our section on disclosing convictions for practical advice on positive disclosure.
