Business case for recruiting graduates with disabilities

Diversity Logofor recruiting graduates with disabilities

Many of the country's leading employers are now recognising the business advantages of recruiting, retaining and developing disabled employees.

There are, in fact, some very persuasive arguments for employing disabled people:

  • Surveys reveal that disabled people can offer the same range of skills and talents as anyone else and often have additional problem-solving expertise developed through management of everyday life.

  • Productivity rates of disabled people in work are similar to, or better than, other workers.  They also have better than average safety records.

  • Disabled people in work have better attendance records than non-disabled workers and tend to remain with companies longer.

  • To reflect both a diverse workforce in an increasingly competitive global market the talent and experience of disabled people is vital.

  • Disabled customers represent a significant market.  Disabled workers are therefore a valuable source of information when targeting this customer base.

  • Managing disability within an organisation adds to multi-skilling in the workplace by helping recruiters to focus on competencies and supervisors to analyse tasks and delegate appropriately.  This enables teams to make better use of the skills of all its members.
