Undergraduate Study Abroad
There are a number of modules (classes) that have
been designed specifically for Study Abroad students to maximise
the London aspect of your Study Abroad Experience. The University
of Westminster was the first university to design these courses,
and has several years experience in delivering these popular
classes.
Art and Society 1ENL425
This class uses London as the classroom. Instead of reading
about the architecture, history and visual 'text' of St. Paul's
cathedral you will be in St Paul's as you discuss and explore these
aspects of one of London's most important buildings.
The class examines the main periods of and movements in the
history of painting, sculpture and architecture as seen in London,
and considers the role of London as a cultural capital with regard
to its historic buildings, public collections and its place in the
contemporary international art market.
During the course you will visit the following places, amongst
many others: the National Gallery, Tate Britain, Tate Modern,
Banqueting House, St Paul's Cathedral, Royal Academy,
Sothebys

London Theatre in Performance
1ENL420
Each year London's theatres stage a rich variety of plays that
attract international stars to tread the boards of this vibrant
theatre scene. London Theatre in Performance enables students to
explore the wide variety of theatrical forms and genres in
different types of institutions based in London (i.e. West End
Commercial Theatre, Subsidised Theatre, Fringe theatre) .
London Theatre in Performance incorporates visits to plays and
classroom based learning. The module aims to introduce students to
the institutions, patterns and structures that make up London's
Contemporary Theatre and to develop students' ability to
analytically review theatre productions from an informed
perspective.

Devising London 1ENL421
The module is called 'Devising London' because it is intended
that aspects of London (and student responses to being in London)
will form the subject matter on which the groups of students will
devise their piece of work and 'devised theatre' will be the means
by which they approach the subject.
The course will introduce students to various aspects of
contemporary London life which they will research and explore
through the medium of performance. The initial two weeks will
consist of an induction period introducing students to methods of
devising performance and concentrating on London's history after a
visit to the Museum of London. After an exploratory period they
will concentrate on institutions representing the fields of
government, culture/ entertainment/ media, commerce, sport and
leisure, architecture and town planning and transport.

Writing London 1ENL428
The course will introduce students to various aspects of
contemporary London life by encouraging them to reflect on their
own experiences as being part of the community within the city.
They will explore this through the medium of creative writing in
drama and prose. Students will be encouraged by the series of
workshops in which they will discuss their own work and that of
other students in order to help them become critically reflective
practitioners. The emphasis will be on dramatic writing (weeks 1-6)
and prose short story writing (week 7-12) during the classes.
Students will be expected to produce one short piece (1,000-1,500
words) in both genres for the portfolio, as well as to attend and
engage with the course. The course will include writing workshops
at a London theatre, a visit from a young upcoming playwright and
two visits to see new plays at the theatre.
