English language requirements


 

All applicants whose first language is not English or who have not studied their secondary education in English should normally achieve a recognised English qualification, as listed below (*please note: some courses may ask for higher scores and a full list of these is available at Courses requiring higher English levels).

 

IELTS

International English Language Testing Service
 
  • for International Foundation level entry - 5.5  overall
  • for undergraduate Bachelors study  - 6.0 overall
  • for postgraduate Masters study - 6.5 overall (some schools require a minimum 6.0 in each element with an overall band of 6.5)
  • for Research degrees (MPhil / Phd) - overall 6.5 with 6.5 in each element. Students will be required to do a compulsory English programme in the first semester but will not have to sit an additional English test. Students with 7.0 overall with 7.0 in each elements may not have to do the English programme.

Test of English as a Foreign Language

  • for undergraduate study - 550 (paper) / 80 (internet)
  • for postgraduate taught study - 600 (paper) / 92 overall with a minimum of 20 in the writing element
  • for research degrees (MPhil / Phd) - 600 (paper) / 92 overall with a minimum of 20 in the writing element. Students will be required to do a compulsory English programme in the first semester but will not have to sit an additional English test. Students with 620/107 may not have to do the English programme.
